Digit-Symbol Substitution Test
Use the key: tap the digit that matches the symbol
Symbol Coder is built on the Digit-Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), a subtest of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and one of the most widely used measures of processing speed. A key pairs nine symbols with the digits 1–9; you translate as many symbols as you can before time runs out. It taps how quickly you can take in a symbol, look it up, and act — a blend of visual scanning, associative memory, and speed.
Cognitive domain: Processing Speed
A key is shown at the top: each symbol sits above its digit. A single symbol then appears; tap the digit the key assigns to it. A new symbol follows immediately. Get through as many as you can in 60 seconds — the key stays visible the whole time, so this is about speed and steadiness, not memorizing.
Your score is how many symbols you code correctly in 60 seconds. On the MindSprint scale, around 45 is top-tier. Because the key is always visible, the ceiling is set by how fast you can scan, match, and tap — not by memory.
